Description:
shunga

Label Text:
Typical of erotic prints, or "shunga" (literally 'spring pictures'), this impression bears no identifying marks. The inscriptions represent the speech of the lovers and contain many ribald puns related to sexual intercourse. Perhaps both most humorous and most shocking to the contemporary viewer is the cat, who is also given dialogue that expresses his delight at the scene and its seminal aftermath.
