Description:
Top to a man's early 20th-century bathing suit, made of a light-medium and black horizontally striped knitted (fine gauge) wool. Until the advent of synthetics in the mid-twentieth century, bathing suits for both men and women were made from knitted wool. At inside neckline in back there is a small white label with red lettering "BROOKS BROTHERS/ NEW YORK." At the inside hem, a small cotton label is tacked inside with a combination of printing and hand lettering "53/ BROOKS BROS./ 175 C/ K4 40/ 5 YE [or S YE]." Brooks Brothers began in 1828 and quickly became an early pioneer of the men's ready-made suit business.
