Description:
Woman's petticoat, constructed asymemtrically with four horizontal flounces on the proper right front side, and a single, full-length vertical drape on the left, which would have closely followed the pattern of the dress skirt it supported. Asymmetrical skirts are seen in fashion in the 1870s and 1880s and acted to enhance visual interest in dress. All the flounces are densely embroidered with matching cotton thread in floral, Greek key and cornucopia designs. The petticoat closes with a back placket just to the right of the center back. Despite its narrow silhouette, its hem measures 112”, much of that tightly cartridge pleated into a 1 ¼” width at the center back.
