Description:
Silver spoon with an upturned, tipped spatulate-end handle and elliptical bowl with rounded drop and lobed shell, which is marked "Austin" in script in a rectangle for Ebenezer J. Austin (1733-1802), and engraved with the initials "H.A" in block letters on the back of the handle. Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Ebenezer Austin probably trained with his uncle Samuel Edwards unitl about 1754, and briefly worked in Charlestown or Boston before moving to Hartford, Connecticut, about 1761. Austin was the cousin of silversmith Josiah Austin (1719/20-c.1780) and brother of pewterer Nathaniel Austin (1741-1816).
