Description:
Chinese export porcelain small octagonal plate decorated in the Famille rose palette in purple, rose, green, iron red, black, brown, blue, yellow, and gilding. The center well has the coat of arms of the Wilson family, "Sable a wolf rampant (or salient) or in chief three mullets argent (?)" although the mullets are usually of six points; the crest, "A demi wolf rampant or"; and the motto "Sincerity". Many Wilson families used this crest and coat; this service may have been for Thomas Wilson who married Mary Hawley of Oakham in 1768 since the shield and mantling are similar but not the crest or mullets. However, there are other possibilities: Matthew Wilson of Eshton Hall, Gargrave, Yorkshire, who married Frances, sister of Robert, 1st Lord of Clive, in 1759; or John Wilson of Broomhead (1719-1783) who married Susannah Oates of Denby, and whose son Joseph was in the East India Company and died in Bengal. The rim has a gilt spearhead border around the edge, and four floral sprays in purple, rose, green and iron red; the well has a gilt spearhead border.
