Description:
Man's foliate-printed cotton waistcoat with six center front buttons ending below the chest, one original brass hook and eye closure at the neck, and lined and backed with bleached, pain-weave cotton. During the early 19th century, colorful designs printed on American-made cottons offered a wide variety of novelty. Waistcoats such as this example were just one of the ways in which 19th-century men could infuse color into their wardrobes.
