Description:
Warp faced, woven worsted wool sash, woven on a tape loom, worked in vertical blue and white stripes with russet, and dark and light blue borders, which is stitched "NATHANAEL BARTLET [1734-1778] OCTOBER 19 1771." The sash was probably woven using a rigid heddle tape loom. Nathaniel Bartlett (1734-1778) was from Plymouth, Massachusetts, and served in Albany, New York, for the Crown Point expedition in 1775. His sash, worn either across the body or around the waist, is a rare survival. Woven on a tape loom, it would have added a decorative touch to Bartlett’s appearance on the battlefield.
