Description:
Man's waistcoat, padded. Blue pre-woven design on white/off-white ground. This waistcoat is reputed to have been worn to a wedding in 1840. There is a photograph of the person who owned it (carte de visite) but he is not wearing this item. The type of weaving is called "woven to shape" or in French "tisse en forme" and was developed about 100 years earlier in Lyon, France. These, pre-designed and woven pieces of cloth were purchased by tailors and the made up as they were picked out by clients. Even the covers of the buttons were pre-woven as part of the design.
