Description:
OH: 7/8" ODiam: 9 1/2" Cast pewter plate made by Thomas Danforth II of Middletown, Connecticut, Danforth was born in Taunton, MA in June 1731, and the family moved to Norwich, CT in 1733. By 1755 he had moved to Middletown, CT, and his marriage to Martha Jacobs was recorded there in 1756. Danforth worked primarily in brass and copper, and some pewter. Danforth partnered with Jacob Whitmore and by the time of Danforth's death in 1782, he had about 260 pounds of pewterer's molds owned jointly in his estate. Danforth probably trained his sons, Thomas III and Joseph, in the metal manufacturing craft. Circular plate with wide smooth brim, single incised circle in well, on underside booge is hammered, marked on underside with two lion in gateway touchmarks for "THOMAS/ DANFORTH," stamped X with crown, and four pseudo-hallmarks for TD, griffin head, britannia, and sword.
