Label Text:
The newspaper Pravda (Russ. Truth) serves as the background of this and several other prints in the series. It was the official voice of the Communist Party and represents the saturation of Soviet life with ideology. The red figure of Lenin is a tiny spot at the level of the head of the person whose legs we see beneath. The black silhouette to the right depicts Nikita Khrushchev, the party leader who (moderately) liberalized politics and culture in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The black figures wearing hats to the left represent the Soviet nomenklatura--holders of important administrative positions.
