Description:
Cheese cupboard or cheese press built into the attic of a one-story house built in 1763 and used as a tavern by Abraham Batchelder (1721-before 1789). In 1761, Abraham and his brother Jethro, and Moses Ordway established Loudon, originally part of Canterbury, New Hampshire, which was incorporated in 1773. Abraham was active in the town as a land surveyor, laying out the original town lots, selectman and constable. The cupboard has five straight-sided shelves nailed with two cut nails per board into two side boards with arched tops that rise above the flat top. The two hinged cupboard doors have been covered with cheesecloth attached with leather strip and tacks, which would have kept the flies off the cheese while still allowing ventilation. One of the pinned doors is attached to the case with butt hinges; the other door, with its original and only set of leather hinges, is attached with rose head nails.
