This print is signed at lower-middle "Kunisada ga" ('drawn by Kunisada') a style of signature most prevalent in the artist's oeuvre before the 1830s. To the right of the seal are the circular kiwame seal of the censor and the mark of publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi of the firm Eijudō, a triple-comma ('mitsutomoe') design beneath a single peak. Sakata no Kintoki is identified by the text at top-left. Sakata no Kintoki is the adult name taken by Kintarō, a figure from Japanese folklore who was a youth with preternatural strength. He is often depicted wrestling a carp. In adulthood, he became a valued warrior for a powerful warlord. However, he retains the most recognizable aspect of Kintarō: his bright red skin.
This print has been dated based on stylistic comparison, as well as the styles of the signature and the kiwame seal.
