Label Text:
This print is signed at lower-left "Toyokuni ga" ('drawn by Toyokuni') within a red toshidama cartouche. Immediately to the right of the signature are the date and the aratame seals of the censor, which indicate a date of inspection the seventh lunar month of 1857 (Ansei 4), which has been used as the basis for this dating. Another impression of this print is held by the Waseda University Theatre Museum, Tokyo (acc. no. 006-3569), where the actor has been identified as Ichikawa Ichizō III. Though the print itself bears no markings in support of this attribution, such as an actor's crest, it is known that the Osaka-based actor gave several performances in Edo ca. 1857, so it is possible that the attribution is correct. In addition, Waseda provides an attribution to an Edo-based publisher, called "Iseyoshi" based on the reading of his seal. The attribution for this basis is unclear. However, records indicate a period of activity for Iseyoshi of ca. 1855–1860, as well as other collaborations with Kunisada.
