Description:
Wrought and cast iron wafer iron with the initials "C M" and the date, "1774" on the inside of one round, cast iron head; and a sailing boat over the initials "IB" in a heart shape on the other. The interior rims on both heads have a wavy band with dots within two lines. Originally, the smaller wafer irons were used for making wafer bread for Mass and other religious ceremonies, and then later used for common secular use. Cooks poured batter onto the interior of the hot irons to produce thin wafers with the irons' decorative or plain patterns, which then were often twisted into cornucopia shapes and filled with sugar, jellies, etc. Wafer irons increased in popularity and frequency in the early 19th century with the expanded array of available foods and innovations and improvements in cookery.
