Description:
Woman's one piece, sleeveless evening dress embroidered in all-over gold and silver sequins onto a silk or rayon net ground. Further embroidered with glass pearls and beads. The dress features a V-neck line and scalloped hem. A label inside the proper left edge of the back neckline indicates "MADE IN FRANCE." By the middle of the 1920s, women's dress reflected a new, streamlined appearance, giving wearers an unprecedented amount of freedom and bodily exposure. Fashionable dresses during this period were characterized by a straight silhouette, in a chemise cut such as this example, with shorter, below-the-knee hemlines. Becasue of the straightforward, simple silhouettes, many were often embellished extravagantly, as in this example's all-over embroidery with metallic, shiny silver and gold sequins. The arrangement of the repeating embriodery pattern at the skirt hem resembles the top of a New York skyscraper, itself a symbol of the new modern era.
