Description:
Large, deep, unusually shaped collar of handmade bobbin lace. It is a mixed lace incorporating very fine bobbin made motifs with needle made inserts on a net reseau. The overall design is formed by laying individual motifs on parchment and tying them together with handworked (needle) brides with picots. The front and back of the collar have a different combination of motifs. The leaves around the edge of the back are layered and the leaves (large and small) are give a three dimensional effect with bundles of thread forming the veins. The edges of the motifs are outlined with a fine gimp thread. There are visible areas where pieces were joined. It is possible this is a late 18th century piece but more likely 19th. This double layering is more common in the 19th. Referred to as "Duchesse de Bruxelle" in the 19th century (or sometimes listed under "Guipure" lace - lace made without a net ground. A remarkable piece - unusual in shape and design. Adds a fine piece to our earlier laces.
