Born in St. Petersburg, the son of composer Alexander Serov, Valentin Serov studied art with Ilya Repin in Paris and Moscow, as well as at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He participated in World of Art exhibitions from 1898 on and was best known for his luminous Impressionist portraits of aristocrats and ballet celebrities such as Nijinsky, Pavlova, and Rubinstein. Serov also designed Orientalist sets for Diaghilev’s production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Schéhérazade.
