Description:
Silver two-handled cup and cover marked "IS" in a rectangle for James Scott, and a Hibernia, harp crowned, king's head or duty mark, and date letter "T" for 1815. The cup is engraved on the body with the Keating coat of arms with the crest a boar passant; seal of the Corporation of Kells, County Meath; and with the inscription, "This CUP is presented by the Burgefses & FREEMAN / of the Corporation of Kells, to Wm. KEATING ESQR. Deputy Sovereign / as a Token of their Esteem for his unremitting zeal, in promoting the interests of their Corporation at all times. / 29 September 1815." The names of twenty-nine men who presented the cup are engraved inside the cover (see data file for names). A letter dated Nov. 14, 1894 accompaning the cup from William Keating Clare, the grandson of William Keating, notes that the Deputy Sovereign was the equivalent of the Deputy Mayor under the the laws of the Old Municipal Corporation of Ireland. The mayor was the Marquis of Headofrd, but he was away the majority of the time so the magisterial duties were usualy performed by the Deputy. The cup descended through the family to his great-great-grandaughter, the current owner, Mrs. Cathleen Clare Esleeck. The vase-shaped cup has a cover with a large pineapple finial and a band of wigglework, bell flowers and acanthus leaves around the stepped rim; trumpet-shaped body engraved with an applied band of egg-and-dart molding and a wide shaded band of flowering vines; two D-shaped scroll handles; and a trumpet-shaped foot.
