By 1981, Betsey Johnson had spent two decades in New York City fashion – first as part of the youthquake scene with Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground, and at her boutique Betsy Bunky Nini on the Upper East Side. In the '70s she took control of ther rock-n-rollers' label "Alley Cat, then started her own fashion line. 1981 was actually a low point for her: her second collection didn't sell, leaving her without funds to stage a show that year. Undaunted, she opened a retail store in SoHo. In 1994, she designed the dress Lisa Loeb wore in the video for pop hit "Stay (I Missed You)," virtually defining mid-'90s fashion. In 2002 she was inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame, and in 2011 she had more than 65 stores worldwide.
