Description:
Powder horn inscribed "Elijah Case...." and attributed to the Simsbury carver, Roxbury, Massachusetts. Elijah Case, Jr. is listed as serving in the 8th Connecticut Regiment from July 11 to December 18, 1775. The Case horn is above average in all aspects of its carving: the beautifully incised geometric designs and consistently rendered name and place are similar to those of Richardson Minor (no. 52). Instead of repeating the geometric designs, the carver filled most of the space with fish, crossed muskets, a house and a tree. This horn is one of three known examples made by the Simsbury Carver, whose identity is still unknwon.
