Description:
"Sergeant Isaac Whelpley," Fort Number Four (Charlestown) N.H. Inscription: "the roses of red, the grass is green, the day is /Past: which I have seen and a / fair Lades Buty decay est; Levi Burns." This horn is in poor condition but is included here because of its unusual philosophical verse, the excellence of its engraving, and the admirable state of preservation of the highly decorated lobe on its plug end. The decorative devices and calligraphy are virtually identical to those of the Baird horn but instead of muskets & ships, J.W. engraved a goblet and bowl. Severe scaling has obliterated some motifs, especially the lettering, although the signature of J.W. has remained distinct. The horn has a lobe that is beautifully scalloped and decorated with typical J.W. floral and geometric designs. Isaac Whelpley served during the 1757 campaign and during the 1761 campaign.
