Description:
Sheraton-style rectangular bureau with four drawers with round brass pulls and four elongated, turned legs. This bureau was probably made for William Ward (b. 1791) and his wife, Olivia Stebbins (1789-1864), the daughter of Ebenezer Stebbins (1763-1831) of Deerfield, who married in 1820. Ward established a farm on River Road on the banks of the Connecticut River in the Sugarloaf district of South Deerfield in the 1820s. The chest descended in the Ward family until acquired at auction in 2004. A letter dated July 17, 2004 from William Hubbard in the file notes: "My mother's sister, Ethel Haskins Eastman born September 12, 1884, married William Elon Ward, who was born March 3, 1885. He was the son of Frank E. Ward and Martha Ann Sanderson. The farm was sold to developers in the 1960s and the homestead and hugh barn were surrounded by houses."
