Description:
Silver spoon with a downturned fiddle handle, pointed shoulders, and pointed oval bowl, which is marked "[sprig} H [sprig]" in a rectangle on the back of the handle for Daniel Booth Hempsted (1784-1852), and engraved "LJP" in script on the front of the handle. Hempsted apprenticed to Asa Spencer (c.1780-1847) in New London, Connecticut, in 1802, and became his partner in 1806 as Spencer & Hempsted; and partnered with Nathaniel Saltonstall and Asa Spencer in the firm of D.B. Hempsted & Co. in Eatonton, GA, from circa 1821-1852. That business continued after Hempsted's death in 1852 with his son Daniel (1822-1901) until about 1882. Hempstead is also listed as a master to his son, Daniel Booth Hempsted circa 1835 in New London, and appeared on the 1850 census in New London, listed as a jeweler.
