Description:
English soft-paste porcelain teacup and saucer decorated in the Imari palette in blue, red, and gilding; this decoration is often called the "Redgrave" pattern, named for a family of enamellers that worked at Lowestoft and produced a large class of designs decorated in underglaze blue with overglaze enamels and slight gilding. However, there is no evidence that this family is responsible for these wares. Lowestoft was a seaside town on the Suffolk coast, which produced soft-paste procelain. Its distance from the main centers of ceramic production contributed to the individual nature of its products and its slow stylistic development. Founded c.1757 by five partners, the factory continued to produce wares until c.1799, when the factory faced financial hardships from the increased competition with Staffordshire earthenwares. Both the circular shallow saucer with its sloping sides and U-shaped cup have applied foot rim; there are no marks on the bases. Both have a scene depicting two quail on the ground with flowers and rocks with holes; the border has repeating tight scrolls interspersed with red ovals. The saucer has modern white labels that read: "POX / 13" and "Lowestoft / Redgrave;" the cup has a modern white label that read "4100CYC /c / $90" and on the base "POX / 13 cup." This set was confirmed as Lowestoft and dated by English porcelain expert Dr. David Redstone during a visit by members of the English Ceramic Circle, May 13, 2010.
