Description:
Rectangular tea canister with arched top and attached metal lid. Although similar to Meissen porcelain designs, this tea canister has many flaws such as the pitted surface of the porcelain and the halos around the floral designs. The lack of skill and quality in the porcelain may indicate that it was made at another factory in Germany. The decoration was done by a hausmaler (house decorator), an independent enameler. The body of the canister is decorated in polychrome overglaze enamel colors, often called "Indianische Blumen" or "Indian Flowers" for their similarity to Asian porcelain designs; the silver lid is a replacement for an original ceramic lid; the base ring is silver and the cap is a later (early to late 19th C) silverplate replacement; marked in ink on the base "3368/a/g/seb ih.".
