Description: Silver ladle with a circular bowl and a rounded drop within two pointed sections; a stem that has a rectangular lower section narrowing to a rectangular upper section; curved down-turned handle with wide pointed tip; and a short midrib on the back of the handle. The ladle is marked "MM" in serrated square twice on the back of the handle for Marcus Merriman, Sr. (1762-1850), and engraved with the initials "LBB" in script on the front of the handle. Merriman operated his business on State Street in New Haven where he was one of the most prolific silversmiths in Connecticut. Many examples of his work survive and include such forms as tea wares, jewelry, porringers, and church silver. In the early nineteenth century, Merriman formed partnerships with several of his former apprentices and continued working until 1826.
