Description: Birth certificate for "PATTY JENNESS Of DEERFIELD. Born April 22. AD. 1785", done in watercolors (red, green, yellow, brown) and ink on a tan beige rag and wood pulp wove paper. The inscription is topped by a row with three baskets of flowers and leaf sprays, and four trees separated from the inscription by three red horizontal lines. Patty Jenness (1785-1812) married Phineas Colby; their daughter Sally died in 1807. George Melvill was an 18th-century school teacher and notable American calligraphic artist. He is known for his decorative drawings, especially his illustrated family genealogies and birth certificates created in New England. Melvill taught in Candia, Raymond, Wolfborough, and Farmington, New Hampshire during the period from the 1780s to 1800. It has been speculated that Melville was born in Fife, Scotland before 1755 and probably immigrated first to Massachusetts before settling in New Hampshire. Examples of Melville's family trees created for people including the Honorable John Dudley, Esquire; Samuel Batcheldor; and Thomas Mathes.
