Label Text:
In a landscape reminiscent of Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, 1960, a black-and-white photograph by the photographer and conservationist Ansel Adams, Pederson-Krag imposes an orange overtone that conveys a sense of intense heat. The surface of the mountain is bare yet rough, signifying the most rudimentary state of nature, which ruthlessly challenges human beings. As he walks before the single erect mountain, the lone man seems neither daunted nor particularly spirited; instead, his figure bespeaks a determination to endure hardship, echoing a deeply rooted American belief that people discover their strength and character by confronting rugged frontiers and the hostile wilderness.
