Edward Hopper’s etching of a nude young woman showcases not only his steadfast focus on the human figure but also his masterful technique. The lone (often female) figure in an architectural setting would become one of the dominant themes in his art. In this early etching, however, the figure stands apart from any discernible environment, so the image appears more like an academic study. Hopper modeled her body convincingly, depicting shadows through techniques known as “hatching” and “crosshatching”—that is, by etching many small parallel and intersecting lines.
