genre

Label Text:
Robert Gwathmey was born in Richmond, Virginia, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before embarking on a career as a teacher, first at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, and later at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. Passionately aware of social injustices and racial inequities, Gwathmey addressed these issues in his work throughout his career.

Unlike most of his paintings which lean toward a more Social Realist style, We Buy Old Gold shows Gwathmey's understanding of cubism, with its use of fragmented space, flat planes of color, and facets of disparate everyday elements.
