Description:
Pair of woman's boots in pink silk satin with square toes, ten pairs on lacing holes, white linen plain weave lining, brown leather soles, and wooden stacked heel, which has "2m" in ink on the tongue behind the lacing. After years of flat or nearly flat shoes, heels returned in the 1850s. This pair is identical in construction to an off-white pair in the HD collection (HD F.481) except for the addition of a stacked heel. They illustrate the practice of some shoemakers who continued to use the same heelless lasts for shoes, but added a small heel to the finished product in an awkward attempt to capture the fashion.
