Description:
Pair of men's black satin weave silk shoes dating to the turn of the 19th century. Men's shoes from the 18th and early 19th century rarely survive. This pair illustrates the degree to which men's styles conformed to fashion, and their resemblance to more well known women's examples. This pair features a pointed toe, latchet ties, and a spring heel. Each shoe measures 11" long from toe to heel quarter, and over 3" wide across the instep. The shoes may have descended in the Dexter family of Providence, Rhode Island.
