Description:
Pair of men's narrow, square-pointed shoes dating to the middle of the 19th century. Their construction features woolen uppers surrounded by brown leather, which would have helped protect the uppers against mud or dampness. The shoes secured onto the foot with latchets or flaps that each have a single hole for lacing. The shoes also feature a short, stacked wooden heel. Inside, written against the white cotton lining, is "Mr. A[illegible] and "8" written on one sole, which may suggest an attempt at standardized sizing. See also HD F.744.
