Burroughs painted Departure at Dawn during his first year as Assistant Curator of Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he purchased now-celebrated works by Bruegel, Van Eyck, and Michelangelo. Burroughs developed his pale tonalities, flat surfaces, and linear designs from the example of the French easel and mural painter Puvis de Chavannes.
