Emerging from interest in so-called action painting in the 1950s, Paul Jenkins’s art extends that movement’s exploration of the inherent properties of paint. Jenkins perfected a method involving a delicate balance of control and the embrace of accident while pouring highly diluted paint onto typically large canvases, thereby allowing his rich colors to flow and interpenetrate. Exhibiting many of these characteristics, Phenomena Phoenix Run belongs to discrete body of about a dozen works Jenkins executed on Plexiglass, a material that provided unusual opportunities to experiment with color transparency. The outcome is a modern and painterly variation on the medieval tradition of the stained glass window. Jenkins customarily titled his works “Phenomena” because, as he put it, “phenomenon . . . is involved with the capture of [the] ever-changing, both in the act of painting and in the final result.”
