Label Text:
The subject of this dramatic scene by Isabey, the French Romantic painter associated with British watercolorist Richard Parkes Bonington, remains uncertain. It might possibly depict a scene from Faust, in which Marguerite (Gretchen) chooses to stand trial for the drowning of her baby, rather than escape prison with her lover and the evil Mephistopheles.
