Johnson depicts Edwina Booth—the daughter of the celebrated Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth (1833–1893) and the niece of President Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth (1838–1865)—on the eve of her marriage to the banker Ignatius R. Grossman (later spelled Crossman)
