Label Text:
A gregarious figure with a penchant for alcohol and women, George Luks was the least academic of the group of painters known as "The Eight." Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, he worked as an artist-correspondent for several newspapers before turning to painting full-time. Growing up near the Pennsylvania coal mines, Luks was a champion of the working class and his paintings and watercolors demonstrate this (see Pennsylvania Mining Town, also in this gallery).

Luks worked with energy and spontaneity, and his work reflects this sense of immediacy. His portraits and landscapes emanate a remarkable sense of candor and freshness. While Luks often documented the poverty and the plight of the social misfits he encountered, he was also interested in the heart of his subject, and his work exhibits a raw and human element.
