Label Text:
Barnaby Martinot was probably the creator of this watch. Born in Paris, he belonged to the French dynasty of Martinot clock- and watchmakers, dating back to around 1549. A highly ornamented piece of jewelry, this is an example of “verre eglomisé,” a painting technique on glass or crystal. Here, executed in ruby red and emerald green with gold and silver, Apollo is holding a lyre while Diana, the goddess of the hunt and moon, has her quiver of arrows and a half moon decorating her hair.
