Label Text:
South Hadley-born Chandler spent the early years of his career as an itinerant portrait painter in northwestern Massachusetts, collaborating with his wife, Lucretia Ann Waite, who reportedly "finished up" her husband's paintings. After several years based in Boston, the Chandlers settled in Hubbardston in 1860, where they spent the rest of their lives. Here, Chandler captured rings around the moon, an optical effect caused when light refracts through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.
