Label Text:
The subject of this flinty and striking portrait has been identified as Bridget Duncan of Billerica and Worcester, Massachusetts. It is the work of an experienced limner; however, the artist's identity remains a mystery. Duncan was a Worcester resident and descendant of one of the first families of Billerica. In 1743 she married Simon Duncan, a Worcester farmer and also a descendant of the founders of Billerica. Together the couple had nine children, Bridget Duncan died in Worcester on April 4, 1807.
