Description:
English Staffordshire earthenware figurine of Benjamin Franklin in green, cream, purple, blue, and black, standing on an oval base. The figure is wearing a purple cravat, cream vest with purple trim and blue and purple polka dots, and green britches, holding a black tri-corner hat under is left arm and a document in his right hand. This figurine may have been copied after a Wood original. According to the entry for a similar figure at the American Philosophical Society, this ceramic figurine is an adaptation of François Marie Suzanne's 1793 terracotta statuette of Benjamin Franklin. Suzanne’s statuette was frequently reproduced with variations of costume and poses. Potter Inventory No. 383. At times these Franklin figures are labeled "George Washington"
