Artist Statement:
I’m frequently asked about my process in making these prints since many people don’t quite know what they’re seeing. To put it simply, it is a cross between a 19th century idea and 21st century technology. The images are landscape photographs taken over many years of a property we’ve had for over 25 years in the Adirondacks on Lake Champlain. The images are captured using film; I still use film. Then, I scan and print various images, and paint on top of them. That part — the process of hand painting on top of black and white photographs — would be a little bit like Edward Steichen or Gertrude Käsebier — much Victoriana. My images though are from color film stock, so it’s painting color on top of color. These painted images are then re-scanned, slightly enlarged and printed on a softer, higher quality paper. It’s been a long and time-consuming process. —Ellen Phelan
