Label Text:
"We must reassess how we move through space because our space is nature and it also can be erased." – Michelle Stuart

Born in LA in 1933, Michelle Stuart has created a multifaceted body of work that defies categorization, yet is bound to one overarching theme: the intersection of Nature and the Human upon the earth. Her multi-decade project, begun in the 1960s: recording imprints that define identity, time, space, history, and erasure. She often uses organic materials, from twigs to dirt to beeswax, pressed into paper, blended with photography; her ARTIFACT is is an archetypal piece in that regard. She's exhibited extensively over the past 40 years, most recently at Dia: Beacon (2017), and her work is in the permanent collections of MoMA, The Art Institute of Chicago, SFMoMA, and the Tate Gallery, among others. She lives and works in New York City.

Artist's Process noted in catalogue: Paper was hand-torn and a wash of paint applied to it. After drying, the paper was laid on a press bed atop pebbles and twigs, and the press was run over the paper. Earth was rubbed into the paper and affixed. Three photographs were trimmed and mounted on the page.
