Description:
Small, full-length double daguerreotype of Edward Wells Colton (1831-1887) and his wife Susan Maxwell Heard (1837-1874), possibly taken on their wedding day in 1861. The image is an excellent depiction of a couple from western Massachusetts, affording a full length view of their likeness and clothing styles. The daguerreotype process was developed in 1839 by a French man named Louis Daguerre (b.1789). Their popularity as a photography form in the United States lasted until the late 1850s, when the faster and less expensive wet collodian process took over.
