Label Text:
Josephine (Marie-François [sic Joseph] Tascher de la Pagerie) Empress of the French, Queen of Italy - English translation.
Painted portraits of the empress, ultimately intended for a more exclusive audience, were often exhibited at the Salon and copied in painted versions and as prints, the art form through which her image was most widely disseminated. These prints are after official painted portraits by Gérard and Lethière. The proliferation of the image of the empress in the private as well as the public domain helped to secure the legitimacy of her royal identity.
