"I am interested in the sensual power of detail, gesture, and suggestion. The color xeroxes are for me a private exercise in exploring the potentials of these elements without the human reference which is always discovered in my photographs."

Sandi Fellman first became an acclaimed artistic photographer, following the same inclinations that make her Artifact so compelling: a focus on the natural world, and transforming subjects into abstract studies of color, shape and form. Her 2011 series "Deception," which explores the relationship between flower and insect forms, is indicative of this aspect of her work, described by Margaret Loke in The New York Times as "photographs that transform the humble into amazing objects of desire." Her 1986 book The Japanese Tattoo is now in its 10th printing. In the late 2010s, however, Fellman transitioned into ceramics with her acclaimed Vessels series. She lives and works in New York City.
