Description:
Silver ladle with a fluted, double-lipped bowl attached to a turned wooden handle with a silver forked support, which is marked ""HURD" in a rectangle once inside the bowl for Jacob Hurd (1702/3-1758). Jacob Hurd has long been recognized as one of the leading New England silversmiths of the mid-18th century. The patriarch of a prominent Boston silversmithing family, he produced a wide range of tablewares in the Queen Anne style. This elegant and useful design is not unique to the work of Hurd; Paul Revere, Sr. made a very similar ladle now in the Worcester Museum, and others are known.
