Description:
Silver strainer with a circular, dished strainer pierced with holes in a stylized flower design and two long, open-scrolled handles, which is marked "S:BURT "in a rectangle once on each handle for Samuel Burt (1724-1754). Samuel Burt and his brothers, William Burt (1726-1752) and Benjamin Burt (1729-1805), probably trained with their father, silversmith John Burt (1692/93-1745/6) of Boston. Samuel probably took over the shop following his father's death in 1745/46. Although a masterful craftsman, little work survives from Samuel Burt because of his early death at the age of thirty-one. Similarly styled strainers were found in 18th century Boston such as those in Historic Deerfield's collection by Jacob Hurd (1702-1758) and Daniel Parker (1726-1785).
