Description:
Silver strainer with a shallow circular bowl with patterned, pierced holes; a small band of gadrooning and engraved lines around the rim of the strainer bowl; and two cast, U-shaped handles with keyhole ends, which is marked "HURD" in a rectangle once on each handle face for Jacob Hurd (1702/3-1758), and engraved with the initials"C / PM" on the back of the bowl. Jacob Hurd has long been recognized as one of the leading New England silversmiths of the mid-18th century. The patriarch of a prominent Boston silversmithing family, he produced a wide range of tablewares in the Queen Anne style. The size and style of this example is similar to a large number of known American examples, all thought to be used in the service of punch.
